Language Arts
This year 3rd graders will participate in reader's and writer's workshop during their ELA block. The workshop module not only allows the students to read and write in various genres, but it also allows the students to engage in meaningful and academic conversations with one another.
Every nine weeks, students will be learning about new strategies pertaining to the current genre being taught in class. Here is a glimpse of what will be taught this year.
This year ELA has new TEKS, with these new TEKS the units have been updated. Not all of the Units of Study (Curriculum Guides) have been released yet, so the breakdowns below is our interpretation of what will be included in the unit titles we have.

This year ELA has new TEKS, with these new TEKS the units have been updated. Not all of the Units of Study (Curriculum Guides) have been released yet, so the breakdowns below is our interpretation of what will be included in the unit titles we have.
First Nine Weeks
Reading
Students will learn the basics and the fundamentals of the readers workshop (read aloud, mini lessons, independent reading, logging reading minutes, journal responses, small group guidelines, partner work guidelines, and etc.). The first nine weeks students will be introduced to the genre of Traditional Literature (fairy tales, myths, legends, and fables). |
Writing
Students will learn the basics and the fundamentals of the writer’s workshop (the 5 stages of the writing process, developing seed ideas, creating flash drafts, revising and editing techniques, and different methods of publications). These first nine weeks students will receive a chance to write a personal narrative piece on themselves and share it with their class. |
Second Nine Weeks
Reading
Students will continue to learn about the different elements within the genre of mystery. They be introduced to informational text while learning about different text features that are present in a nonfiction piece. In this unit students will learn how to grasp the main idea of the text given, find supporting details, and summarize. As a class, we will be reading about Gorillas. |
Writing
Now that students have been reading informational text, students will also receive an opportunity to create an informational text on a topic of their choice. Students learn to incorporate different text features within their own writing to jazz it up. |
Third Nine Weeks
Reading
Students will be introduced to the genres of biographies and research. Teachers will be reading a variety of read alouds such as (The Diary of Anne Frank, A Thousand Paper Cranes, or any of the books from the Who Was series, and a realistic fiction book Because Of Winn Dixie). Along with research, students will participate in research clubs by reading about an animal. Students will gather information to create a research paper of their own. As a class/whole group we will be researching about penguins. |
Writing
Students will develop their own persuasive speeches by coming up with a thesis statement and supporting their own statement with legitimate reasons. |
Fourth Nine Weeks
Reading
During the last nine weeks, the classes will be finishing their research projects that were started in the third nine weeks. After those are completed, the students will be reviewing for their upcoming STAAR test (May 13). Following the STAAR, the students will finish up the Gearing Up for Summer Unit. |
Writing
Students will be developing their own fairytales with the elements of traditional literature that were taught to them in the reader’s workshop. |
